Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
