Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
