Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues after revealing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The Germany international has been absent since August due to knee surgery. Hoped to return sooner, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when stepping up his rehabilitation and failed to reach “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is far more dependable and has more options,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This development leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also available post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Linger

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the weekend encounter. Therefore, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to keep their places in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the substantial investment on squad depth in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a far better place to deal with such setbacks.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, the manager agreed. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in different positions, and they have to be able to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at the top. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Addressing the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it appears like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
