Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
