The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
