Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Denver Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

Jokic was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half during an inadvertent coming together with team-mate Jones.

The other player landed on the foot of the MVP, and he promptly went down to the court grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, that tops the NBA this season in boards and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest prior to incurring the setback.

The player will undergo an scan on Tuesday to assess the severity of the problem.

"Instantly, Jokic understood something was wrong," stated Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone that is injured, it's gut-wrenching, most notably somebody as special as Jokic. We'll find out more on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust together. Obviously, at this moment, I am more worried about him as a person and the disappointment of going through an event like that."
